At 10:30 p.m. ET, FiveThirtyEighthad Trump with a 55 percent chance of winning and a projection of 272.9 electoral votes. These numbers, of course, fluctuated as more results came in.

As states like Florida and North Carolina, which hold crucial electoral votes, went to Trump and other states that were forecast to go to Clinton, like Wisconsin and Michigan, leaned Trump, the despair deepened as disbelief set in.

Concerns extended not just to electoral votes but to the economic implications of a Trump win, with pro-Trump forecasts sending markets tumbling along with everyone's feelings.

There were plenty of Brexit references, too, with thatdisaster not far from many voters' minds, only underscoring the worries and fears of Clinton supporters.

AndFiveThirtyEightwasn't the only forecast causing lots of anxiety. The New York Times' fluctuating meter was causing lots of stress as it bounced back and forth and, later, in favor of Trump. As the needle moved, so did the nation's collective blood pressure.
